Joe Judge on Discipline: 'I Take Things From Everywhere I've Been'

New York Giants head coach Joe Judge was a couple minutes late joining his hit on the Boomer & Gio Show Wednesday morning, leading Boomer Esiason and Jerry Recco to make a joke about having him run some laps in penance.

That act, as it relates to the team, is no joke, and when Judge joined Boomer, Jerry, and the gang, he talked about why it's a policy he believes in.

"It's not about punishment, it's about understanding that there are consequences in games, and you can't expect consequences to be managed in games if they're not practiced, so when something comes up, we handle it accordingly," Judge said. "If someone has a fumble, they're not going to be in the game the next play because the defense has the ball, so they come out. When there's a technique error or something that's not forced, these are things we can control that there's no excuse for. So, it's not about punishment, it's about accountability. Running a lap ain't the worst thing – missing the opportunity to take a rep is worse. But it's a daily reminder that we have to do the right thing."

It's a very Belichick-ian policy, one that even Big Bill himself has weighed in on. But Judge himself even said that while it's something he gleaned while in New England, it's not a "copycat" so much as it is him taking bits and pieces of things that have worked everywhere he's ever been.

"I've had the opportunity to work around a tremendous amount of coaches who are great at what they do, and I've taken something from all of them, but I've always understood that I have to do it with my own personality," Judge said. "I'm not trying to recreate anywhere I've been or imitate anyone; I have my own personality, and I think my team sees it and knows it. But, the things I've found along the way that I see have worked, I'm going to use those. I'm going to trust the process I know to be successful, but I will adjust it to whatever fits our players best."

One thing Judge did see was the incredible relationship Belichick had with Tom Brady, and he's already laying the groundwork for that kind of connection with Daniel Jones.

"He's very driven, he's very focused, and I love working with him," Judge said. "This is a guy who is quiet in nature, but not around the team. I'm pleased with the way he's picking up the offense, and when you correct something, you don't see it come up again. That's the important thing, because it's not about making the mistakes, it's about not repeating the mistakes."

Either way, Judge is just happy to be able to actually coach, relaying how he spent a good part of his annual family summer vacation down South trying to work around potential COVID-19 related pitfalls.

"I always thought we were going to play; we weren't sure if they were going to delay it, depending on what was going on with college, but you just start preparing for different scenarios," Judge said. "I never thought we weren't going to play, but I just felt like the season would happen, and I think all the things the league did and the protocols they put in place have worked to this point. We work on the things we have to do to stay safe and stay healthy around each other. And maybe it's not weird that we wear masks or get tested every day – it's just part of our routine."
