EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Just days after signing with the Giants, defensive end Josh Mauro has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, the league announced Friday.
On Monday, the Giants signed Mauro, 27, to a one-year, $880,000 contract.
The 6-foot-6, 282-pound defensive lineman spent the past four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where he played for Bettcher. He had 22 tackles and a sack last season.
Mauro is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.
In a statement, Mauro blamed the failed test on an over-the-counter supplement that included a banned stimulant.
"While I didn't and would never intentionally put anything in my body that was a banned substance, I wholeheartedly honor and respect the NFL's drug testing policy and I take full accountability," he said. "I want to thank the entire Giants organization for believing in me and giving me an opportunity to compete and help bring another championship to such a storied franchise. I look forward to overcoming this adversity I've ultimately brought upon myself and will do everything I can to contribute to this team winning football games."
