Knicks Dispute Report Saying Dolan 'Courting Offers' To Sell Team

The Knicks shot down a report Monday that said owner James Dolan has been listening to offers to sell the team.

In the latest episode of his podcast, The Ringers' Bill Simmons said multiple people "who know things" and are "people I trust" told him during All-Star weekend that Dolan is "courting offers for the Knicks."

"It's happening," Simmons said. "It's on. It's go time."

Simmons added that Dolan is more interested in making the venues he owns, including Madison Square Garden and The Forum in Los Angeles, the best they can be.

"He really cares about the buildings," Simmons said. "The Knicks are just a pain in the a--. People s--- on him for it. He feels like if he could just sell the Knicks for some crazy price, then he can put that money back into the music/game-experience stuff that he cares about."

But the Knicks released a statement early Monday afternoon saying: "The story is 100% false. There has been nothing. No discussions. No plans to have discussions -- nothing.”

In December, Dolan told ESPN he's kept an open mind about selling the Knicks, adding there had been some very preliminary talks.

"No one has come through with a bona fide offer," Dolan said then. "You hear numbers all the time. ... I think people have sent feelers out, but never any that were pursued."

Dolan said those feelers were around $5 billion.

Earlier this month, Forbes magazine released its annual list of NBA team valuations, and the Knicks, were ranked first at $4 billion

"He wants five (billion dollars) without the building, but I think he knows he's not going to get five," Simmons said.

The Knicks have not won a league title since 1973 and are well on their way to missing the playoffs for the sixth straight year. At 11-47, New York currently owns the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

Last month, Dolan sold the WNBA's New York Liberty to Brooklyn Nets minority owner Joseph Tsai. Dolan also owns the NHL's Rangers.
