The Joe Kelly-Astros kerfluffle has been widely debated for two days now, and just as Twitter came to Kelly's side after the incident, it seems reaction is mixed on the social media platform about the news that Kelly was suspended for eight games for the incident.
WFAN's own Moose & Maggie had differing opinions of the action itself on Wednesday's show, and likely will about the suspension on Thursday – but one New Yorker has already come to Kelly's side: Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman.
Soon after the suspension was announced Wednesday, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal tweeted that "the eight-game suspension for Joe Kelly in a 60-game season is the equivalent of a 22-game suspension in a 162-game season. Seems…harsh."
Stroman quickly responded, and, well, his thoughts weren't kind to the Astros:
Makes zero sense Ken. He wasn't even thrown out of the game. MLB siding with/protecting a team that openly and knowingly cheated their way to a World Series. — Marcus Stroman (@STR0) July 29, 2020Stroman and Kelly have never played together, nor was Stroman as affected by the Astros' cheating scandal as many others – the 2017 Jays finished 76-86, including a 3-4 record against Houston, and Stroman got a win and a no-decision (Jays loss) in his two starts against them – but it's clear that league-wide, there is vitriol.
That is evidenced by Cleveland Indians pitcher Mike Clevinger, who faced (and lost to) the Astros twice in 2017, weighing in after MLB insider Jon Heyman tweeted that Kelly "deserved every bit" of his suspension.
