While Brodie Van Wagenen and the Mets are still searching for a manager, it hasn't stopped them from targeting candidates to be their next pitching coach. Both the Mets and Yankees, who earlier this week fired pitching coach Larry Rothschild, are interested in the University of Michigan's Chris Fetter to potentially lead their rotations.
According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Yankees already interviewed Fetter and the Mets could do the same.
The New York Yankees have interviewed Chris Fetter, the University of Michigan pitching coach, for their open pitching coach job, sources tell ESPN. Fetter is considered a rising star in the industry and has drawn significant interest from major league teams, including the Mets.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 30, 2019Fetter, considered a 'rising star' of pitching coaches, just completed his second season with the Michigan Wolverines. The 33-year old helped lead the Wolverines staff to the College World Series last season, losing in three games to Vanderbilt.
Under Fetter's tutelage, three pitchers from the Wolverines' staff were selected in the 2019 MLB Draft. Tommy Henry by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second round, Karl Kauffmann also in the second round by the Colorado Rockies, and reliever Jack Weisenburger by the Oakland Athletics in round 20. Fetter himself, was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 2009 draft, spending four years in their farm system.
Larry Rothschild had served as the Yankees pitching coach since 2011. The Mets fired their staff leader, Dave Eiland midseason and replaced him with the 82-year old Phil Regan who took the job on an interim basis.
