To make room for Davis, the Mets sent down pitcher Walter Lockett to triple-A Syracuse. They also designated reliever Brooks Pounders for assignment.
Speaking of triple-A Syracuse, Brandon Nimmo will begin a rehab assignment there tonight. Nimmo went 1-for-6 in two rehab games with single-A St. Lucie. Nimmo has been on the IL since May 21. The outfielder has been recovering from a bulging cervical disk in his neck. He's expected to be back on the Mets roster likely at the beginning of September. Nimmo was hitting just .200 with three homers in 14 RBIs in the 43 games he played before heading to the injured list.
Jed Lowrie is alive. It's true. The infielder the Mets signed to a two-year, $20 million deal in the offseason has been out all season with all sorts of injuries. Lowrie is finally going to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday night for St. Lucie. He is going to DH.
In some bad news for the Mets, Robert Gsellman, who was placed on the 10-day IL originally with a sore right triceps, actually has a partical tear of his lat. There is no timetable for his return, but it doesn't sound too promising for him this season.
In some positive injury news for the Mets, Robinson Cano was taking grounders and hitting in batting practice Tuesday at Citi Field. That is promising considering many expected him to potentially be done for the season. It's too early to tell, but it could be a sign that we see Cano back with the team in September.
Davis returns to the Mets after being called up May 22, arriving mid-game and hitting a pinch-hit three-run homer in his first at bat. He only got seven at bats with the team and was sent down after just four games. He will now get a chance and potentially some playing time before Nimmo returns. The Mets chose to keep Aaron Altherr on the roster instead of calling up a reliever to replace him. Altherr has struggled all year, hitting just .085 with one homer and three RBIs.
