Mets first baseman Pete Alonso cannot seem to keep himself off his teammates when they win on a walk-off hit, ripping the shirt off Michael Conforto one summer night last season.
While an MLB season amid the coronavirus pandemic may prove difficult for Alonso to keep his restraint, the slugger may have a few tricks up his sleeve to celebrate in a socially distant fashion.
Alonso appeared on SNY's "Beyond the Booth" recently and was asked about celebrating while attempting to adhere to social distancing.
"Is that a rule?" Alonso asked. "I don't want to put myself in a bind, because I don't know if we're going to get fined or something like that, but how are we going to celebrate a walk-off being six feet apart?"
The SNY crew told mentioned that his teammate Dom Smith suggested a selfie stick, but an alternative then clicked for Alonso.
"Or what we should do is like use the hose to spray the person down, like the field crew hose," he said. "I don't know."
For now, though, the celebrations will have to wait as Major League Baseball figures out a schedule for the 2020 season following contentious negotiations that failed to produce an agreement between the players and owners.
Whenever that may be, Alonso is itching to get back onto the field.
"It's a close-knit group, and I'm ready to get back after it," he said. "All of us pull for each other and it's just a really good environment and a great group of guys. I'm excited for whenever we get back going."
