The Mets have placed catcher Travis d'Arnaud on the 10-day disabled with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, the team announced Wednesday.
Treatment for d'Arnaud's injury will be determined in the coming days, and season-ending Tommy John surgery is a possibility, according to multiple reports.
The Mets have called up Tomas Nido, their top catching prospect, from Double-A Binghamton. He is active for Wednesday night's game in Miami.
In four games this season, the 29-year-old d'Arnaud is batting .200 with one home run and three RBIs.
D'Arnaud has struggled to stay healthy throughout his Mets career. Last season, he missed about three weeks with a bone contusion when his wrist struck the bat of the Phillies' Aaron Altherr while making a throw to second base.
He missed about two months in 2016 with a shoulder strain. During the Mets' 2015 World Series season, he broke his right hand after being hit by a pitch, missing 46 games. Less than two weeks after he returned, he injured his elbow in a play at the plate and missed 32 more games.During his 2014 rookie year, d'Arnaud suffered a concussion and a chipped a bone in his throwing elbow late in the season.
