Shortly after beating the Yankees in the Subway Series finale, the Mets released struggling first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.
The Mets signed the five-time All-Star in January to a one-year, minimum-salary contract ($545,000) after the Atlanta Braves released him after acquiring him in a trade.
Gonzalez, 36, was hitting .237 with six home runs and 26 RBIs. He was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in Sunday night's 2-0 win over the Yankees.
Gonzalez's time in New York was no doubt a low point in an otherwise fine career. The former Padres, Red Sox and Dodgers star is a .287 career hitter with 317 home runs. He has hit 30 or more home runs four times in his career, had 100-plus RBIs seven times and is a four-time Gold Glove winner.
The Mets also announced they are calling up first baseman Dominic Smith and second baseman Ty Kelly from Triple-A Las Vegas and designating catcher Jose Lobaton for assignment.
The Mets' offense has been aenemic. Sunday night's win snapped an eight-game losing streak, and the team has averaged just 1.4 runs over its last nine contests. New York (28-34) ranks 14th among the 15 National League teams in runs scored and 13th in batting average, home runs and OPS.
