Super Bowl-winning coach Mike McCarthy is expected to interview for the Jets' head coaching job, according to reports.
Citing unnamed sources, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was the first to report on the interview Tuesday. The Daily News' Manish Mehta later tweeted: "True. The #Jets will bring Mike McCarthy in for an interview." It is the first known interview for McCarthy, who was fired last month in his 13th season with the Green Bay Packers.
Sources: The #Jets are expected to interview former #Packers coach Mike McCarthy for their vacant head coach position. #NYJ has one of the more coveted jobs and McCarthy would get to work with Sam Darnold. This is his first known interview.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 1, 2019McCarthy, 55, had a 125-77-2 record with the Packers. He led them to the playoffs nine times, the NFC championship game four times and to a world championship in 2010.
A former quarterbacks coach with the Packers and Chiefs, McCarthy could be an ideal choice for a Jets team that is developing Sam Darnold. McCarthy took over as Packers head coach when Aaron Rodgers was still backing up Brett Favre, and Rodgers eventually blossomed into one of the NFL's top QBs.

McCarthy is the fifth known coaching candidate the Jets have reached out to. According to various reports, the team has also requested interviews with Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Cowboys defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator Kris Richard and Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell. Campbell declined his request, NFL Network reported.
The Jets announced Sunday night that they fired coach Todd Bowles after four seasons. Bowles went 24-40 -- including 4-12 this season -- and never reached the playoffs.
