NCAA Grants Spring Athletes Extra Year Of Eligibility

The NCAA announced Friday they will grant spring student athletes an extra year of eligibility after their seasons were canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

"Council leadership agreed that eligibility relief is appropriate for all Division I student-athletes who participated in spring sports," the NCAA said in a statement. "Details of eligibility relief will be finalized at a later time. Additional issues with the NCAA rules must be addressed, and appropriate governance bodies will work through those in the coming days and weeks."

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) March 13, 2020 College athletics are among the many sports’ leagues to suspend or cancel events because of the coronavirus, in a growing list that includes the NBA, NHL, MLS and PGA. The NCAA also suspended recruiting for all sports on and off campus until Apr. 15.In addition to canceling all spring sports, the NCAA called off March Madness. Although students from winter sports were unable to compete in the NCAA Tournament, they did play their full regular seasons. The NCAA hasn't make an announcement regarding the possibility of giving winter sports’ students an extra year of eligibility, but according to basketball analyst Jeff Goodman, the "Committee will also discuss issues for winter sport student-athletes."
