Giants cornerback Sam Beal is expected to be activated off of the team's injured reserve this week.
Head coach Pat Shurmur revealed the optimistic decision in wake of the Giants' 37-18 loss to Dallas Monday night. Dak Prescott carved New York's defense for 257 yards and three touchdowns, as the Giants' secondary struggled to contain the Cowboys' dynamic wide receivers.
"They know I want to be out there," Beal told Giants.com. "I'm not even thinking about it because I know it's coming, I am just waiting for my moment, I'm waiting for that text or call, just ready for that moment."
Coach Shurmur said CB Sam Beal will be activated this week
— New York Giants (@Giants) November 5, 2019Beal, 23, has yet to make his Giants debut since he was selected in the Supplemental Draft in 2018. He signed a four-year deal with the team shortly following his selection, but remained sidelined with a slew of injuries.
The Western Michigan standout missed his entire rookie campaign after he sustained a shoulder injury. Just when he'd recovered from the shoulder surgery, Beal found himself back on the sidelines. He endured a hamstring injury during training camp. New York placed Beal on IR in September.
Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher previously outlined how Beal will fit with the defensive unit, indicating Beal is "going to be an outside cornerback," according to NJ Advance Media's Matt Lombardo in October.
While he was projected to make his first appearance in Week 9, Beal is likely to play in the Giants' next outing — Nov. 10 against the Jets.
Shurmur also said Beal's arrival won't jeopardize rookie CB DeAndre Baker's, who admitted his struggle with the Giants' playbook, spot on the depth chart.
