After reportedly making the decision over a week ago, the New York Jets officially announced they’re moving on from cornerback Trumaine Johnson.

Johnson’s tenure ends after two disappointing seasons with Gang Green, who chose to release the high-priced corner, rather than pay his $11 million salary which was set to become guaranteed March 20. The Jets are handed a $12 million cap hit, but by designating Johnson as a post-June 1 cut, the dead money can be spread out over two years according to the league’s new CBA.

Johnson signed a five-year, $72.5 million contract with the Jets in March 2018. Following a disappointing first season that included injuries and a team suspension, there was hope reuniting with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams could spark the Jets cornerback. Johnson played for Williams from 2014-2016 when the two were in St. Louis, where he established himself as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks.

Johnson briefly lost his starting job last season and was placed on season ending-injured reserve in early November due to injuries to both ankles. In 2018, he dealt with a lingering quad injury and was suspended for the season finale after missing team meetings and practice.Johnson leaves the Jets having collected $34 million, while recording five interceptions and seven passes defended in just 17 games played. With no Pro Bowl selections and having played 16 games only three times during his eight-year career, Johnson has found a way to make $64.7 million over the past four seasons.
