A Yankees division rival has taken a flyer on one of the Bombers' former hurlers.
Per MLB.com's Juan Toribio, the Tampa Bay Rays have signed LHP Dietrich Enns to a minor-league deal, and Enns will report to the Rays' Alternate Site and be added to their 60-man player pool.
Enns, 29, was the Yankees' 19th-round pick in 2012, and was looking to be a quick riser in the organization before Tommy John surgery cost him parts of 2014 and 2015, but he had arguably his best campaign in 2016, moving to the rotation full-time and going 14-4 with a 1.73 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A – levels he had never pitched at prior to that season.
The lefty had a 2.29 ERA in seven starts in Triple-A in 2017 before the Yankees dealt him to the Twins at the trade deadline for LHP Jaime Garcia – but that actually led to Enns' MLB debut (and, so far, only MLB experience), as he made one start and one relief appearance for Minnesota down the stretch in 2017.
Enns spent 2018 in the Twins' system and 2019 with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate before joining the Tully Monsters, one of four teams playing for the "City of Champions Cup" in Joliet, Illinois – this year's alternative league put together by the Joliet Slammers after their independent circuit, the Frontier League, officially suspended the 2020 season amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
While with the Tully Monsters, Enns was impressive, going 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 33 strikeouts over 18 innings pitched, per Baseball-Reference.com.
