Evan Roberts Gets Under Alex Cora's Skin

By WFAN.com

What was Red Sox manager Alex Cora thinking about when David Price was dominating the Astros in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday night? WFAN's Evan Roberts, it turns out.

After Boston wrapped up the AL pennant thanks in part to six shutout innings by Price, Cora said he was bothered by comments that Roberts made during an appearance Thursday on "MLB Now" on the MLB Network.

"I heard somebody today on TV just blasting David, blasting him, calling him the worst pitcher in the postseason," Cora said. "Yeah, the numbers are there, I know. But ... he didn't hesitate -- it was a bad matchup, one of the greatest against the worst. I don't listen much to what's going on outside, but that one got me.

"When he was throwing 94 and the changes, whatever, I was thinking about that segment on MLB Network today. So I don't know, probably the guy's going to blast me because I'm talking about him, whoever he is. But you know what, I'm happy David showed up today, and tomorrow we can turn the page onto the World Series with David Price."

According to the Boston Herald's Michael Silverman, Cora also said Roberts should apologize to Price. Cora never called out Roberts by name but did reference the person who made the remarks as a WFAN host.

On the MLB Network on Thursday, Roberts said Price "was the worst postseason pitcher we have ever seen as a starter. For whatever reason out of the bullpen, the guy is a competent. He is not competent as a starter.

"Let me tell you something: You can't predict baseball? ... I'm going to predict baseball: David Price is going to get beat tonight."

Price entered Thursday's game with an 0-9 record and 6.16 ERA in 11 postseason starts.

Roberts didn't know he was the subject of Cora's wrath until the "Boomer and Gio" show informed him of the Red Sox manager's comments Friday morning.

"I admit I was wrong. I have no problem with that," Roberts said. "I'm happy for them."

"Because I was opinionated? What do you want from me?"

"You're welcome, Boston! You're welcome!" Roberts joked. "I got you to the damn World Series, so I should be sitting like front row for that World Series, Game 1. I'll sit next to my buddy Alex."

Roberts added that he was rooting for the Mets, his favorite team, to hire Cora as their manager last year. "I love Alex Cora," he said.
