Reliever Adam Warren Coming Back For Third Stint With Yankees

The Yankees and Adam Warren aren't done with each just other yet.

According to WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, Warren is coming back for his third run with New York. This time, he signs on a minor-league deal and will have to impress to make the big league roster.

Warren has already had two stints in the Bronx. His time at Yankee Stadium has been largely unremarkable, although he has shown versatililty in that he has appeared as both a starting pitcher and a reliever.

The Alabama native was drafted by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2009 draft, and was with the franchise until December 2015 when he was traded to the Cubs. Chicago didn't even have Warren for half a season before they sent him back to New York in the Aroldis Chapman deal. That trade also included a very young Gleyber Torres.

Warren spent last year with the Padres after the Yankees had dealt him to the Mariners in 2018. He went 4-1 with a 5.34 ERA in 25 appearances for San Diego this season.

Even if he stays in the minors, signing Warren provides depth to the bullpen and starting rotation for the Yankees in 2020. Aaron Boone's team should have one of the stronger groups of pitchers in the league, but someone like Warren could be called up to deputize in the event of an injury avalanche similar to what the team suffered in 2019.

The 32-year-old will have spring training as an opportunity to further prove himself to the Yankees.
