Chili Davis played an instrumental part in the Mets resurgence last season.

Mets slugger Pete Alonso smashed 53 home runs and Jeff McNeil tallied a career-high 75 RBIs under Davis' tutelage as the team's batting coach. When the Mets tabbed Carlos Beltran as their next manager, they hoped to retain Davis on the staff.

Ahead of December's Winter Meetings, the Mets are "close to working out an arrangement" to bring Davis back to the organization, according to WFAN's Jon Heyman.

Chili Davis and the Mets are close to working out an arrangement to bring him back as hitting coach. Alonso, McNeil, Davis and Rosario all had nice to great years under Chili. The Phillies had been reported to be seriously considering Chili.

Davis' contract ended following the 2019 season. There's no indication on the length of Davis' deal, but he reportedly indicated to the Mets he's seeking a multi-year deal in order to join Beltran's staff.

Davis was quickly becoming a candidate to fill coaching voids around the league.

The Phillies showed interest in bringing Davis aboard Joe Girardi's staff in the same role. The Mets chose not to allow Davis depart for a division rival, reaching a resolution days after Davis was named a finalist for the Phillies' gig

With Davis' return, Beltran's staff is starting to take initial shape.

New York has reportedly conducted interviews to address its pitching coach vacancy, according to Heyman. Twins' assistant pitching coach Jeremy Heffner and University of Michigan pitching coach Chris Fetter appear to be the front-runners for the position.
