The Yankees seem to be looking to add depth to their starting rotation now that Luis Severino will be out until at least May.

Severino suffered a shoulder injury and was scratched from his spring training debut on March 5. He was later diagnosed with rotator cuff inflammation and has since been ruled out for the first month of the season as the team elects to be cautious with his injury.

On Sunday, WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman reported that the Yankees had made an offer to free agent Gio Gonzalez as they attempt to deal with Severino's absence.

Yankees made an offer to Gio Gonzalez, but there’s a gap. Not a great deal of optimism at moment but there’s at least reason to think both sides might want to come together.

Gonzalez, who is 33-years-old, started last season with the Nationals before he was traded to the Brewers in August. He went 10-11 with a 4.21 ERA and 1.444 WHIP in 32 starts between both teams last year. Gonzalez was selected to the All-Star Game during his last season with the Athletics in 2011, and was then chosen again the next year after he had been traded to Washington.

Adding another pitcher would give the Yankees another experienced option heading towards opening day. Severino’s injury is the one of concern right now, but more injuries will happen over the course of a long campaign, Gonzalez could see a bit of use if he is signed. On the current roster, Domingo German and Jonathan Loaisiga are two other candidates to help fill the void in the starting rotation left by Severino.

Heyman’s report makes it seem like there is still a bit of ground between the two sides. New York could still opt to add another pitcher if they can’t come to an agreement with Gonzalez.
