Former Islanders Goalie Robin Lehner Pays Homage To Long Island With Tattoo

Robin Lehner went the extra mile to pay homage to his former home.

Lehner, who spent last season with the Islanders, posted a photo of his latest tattoo — an outlined image of Long Island. The 28-year-old posted the ink for his roughly 51,000 followers to see, commemorating the place where he began his "new journey."

"Forever imprinted a place that means the world to me and where I started my new journey," Lehner posted on Twitter. "Tribute to a great place filled with great people. Will forever love the island. Chicago has followed suit."

Lehner was extremely vocal regarding his battle with mental health. He signed a one-year deal with the Islanders prior to the 2018-19 season and documented his personal struggle with alcohol and drug addiction as well as his bipolar disorder.

"Every day is a battle and each day a new chance to grow as a man," Lehner wrote in a 2018 article for The Athletic. "It is time to take the "crazy person" stamp from bipolar disorder ... And now that I have begun my battle with what's behind me, it's time to battle what's in front of me"

Lehner said most teams were hesitant to offer a contract because of his reputation around the league. He later signed a one-year contract with the Islanders, which led to a third place finish in the race for the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the NHL's top goaltender.

He won a career-high 25 games in his first season as an Islander. The Swede became a favorite among Islanders fans, which left a strong impression on the goaltender.

Lehner expressed his willingness to remain with the Islanders — more importantly on Long Island —but he became an unrestricted free agent following last season. He signed with the Blackhawks in July, where he's won 15 games.
