The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have fired head coach Chris Ash.

Rutgers relieved Ash of his duties in wake of the team's embarrassing 52-0 loss to No. 20 Michigan. Nunzio Campanile, the team's tight ends coach, will serve as interim coach.

"We appreciate Chris's dedicated efforts on behalf of our football program, our department and our University," Rutgers athletic director Pat Hobbs said in a news release. "This change is especially difficult because of the steadfast commitment that Chris and his family have made to our student-athletes. Progress has been achieved in many areas, but, unfortunately, that progress has not been realized on the field of play. As such, it is in the best interest of the program to make a change."

Rutgers also dismissed offensive coordinator John McNulty.

Ash's tenure is one that Rutgers' fans will likely want to erase from their memories. Ash, who was hired in 2015 after a successful career with Ohio State as a defensive coordinator, ends his Rutgers' career with eight wins in three seasons, compiling 32 losses. Rutgers will pay Ash $8.7 million in bi-weekly checks for at least the next three years, according to NJ.com’s James Kratch

With Saturday’s loss to the Wolverines, the Scarlet Knights have lost three straight games since their season-opening win. They've been held scoreless when facing ranked opponents, losing 30-0 to then-No. 20 Iowa. Rutgers is set to face Maryland on Saturday in the first game of the Campanile era.

Campanile is in the middle of his second year with the program. He’s worked with the team’s offense since first arriving at the school, coaching the team’s running backs before being named tight end coach. He previously served on the coaching staff for a pair of New Jersey powerhouse high schools — Don Bosco Prep and Bergen Catholic High School.
