Giants rookie linebacker Ryan Connelly suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Sunday, the team announced Monday.

Connelly was carted off the field after making a fourth-quarter tackle on Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins. He underwent an MRI on Monday that confirmed the diagnosis the Giants' medical staff had suspected. Connelly's season is now over after just four games as he has been placed on IR.

The Giants claimed defensive end Chris Peace off waivers from the Chargers to fill their open roster spot.

"It does not feel good," Connelly said after the game, via the New York Post. "I'm hoping it's nothing is what I can say."

Connelly had been a pleasant surprise for Big Blue this season. A fifth-round pick out of Wisconsin, he had 20 tackles, one sack and two interceptions, including one Sunday on the Redskins' opening possession after Janoris Jenkins deflected a Case Keenum pass. That turnover gave the Giants the ball at Washington's 32-yard line, and New York cashed in with a Daniel Jones-to-Wayne Gallman 6-yard touchdown pass.

The Giants won the game 24-3.

Linebacker is one area where the Giants can't afford another injury. They were already without Alec Oglestree (hamstring) and Tae Davis (concussion) Sunday.

Big Blue's next game is at home Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
