BROOKLYN (WFAN) -- He's in a new role, but Spencer Dinwiddie has been a bright spot for the Brooklyn Nets in his third season with the team.
The Nets are 8-14 despite having one of the youngest rosters in the NBA, and despite losing their best player in Caris LeVert to a long-term injury. Dinwiddie has been a big part of that by picking up some of the slack off the bench in LeVert's absence.
The 25-year-old point guard will be out of contract at the end of the season, so Sean Marks and the rest of the Brooklyn front office will have to decide whether they want to extend or re-sign Dinwiddie, or if they want to allocate that money elsewhere.
On Thursday, Dinwiddie spoke precisely to the New York Post's Brian Lewis about the amount of money he is going to ask for at the end of the season.
"Everybody knows what my extension number is: Four for $47 1/2 million," Dinwiddie told Lewis. "It is well documented. Can't go above. It's not like I'm really looking to go below. It is what it is. I'll find out when you guys find out."
The Nets have until December 8 to extend Dinwiddie. The 4-year, $47.5M deal is the maximum he can get from Brooklyn, but another team could offer him more if he enters free agency.
Dinwiddie has become one of the league's best scoring players coming off the bench. He is averaging 16 points and 4.8 assists per game this season. Last year he started more often and averaged 12.6 points and 6.6 assists per contest.
The Los Angeles native has worked hard in his short time in the league, as his path to the NBA wasn't always clear. He was drafted by the Pistons but spent a lot of time in the NBA Development League before signing with the Nets and finding consistent NBA success.
D'Angelo Russell is another promising young player who the Nets will have to either lock-down or lose this coming offseason. Russell has been inconsistent in the early parts of this campaign, and he is set to become a restricted free agent at its end.

Brooklyn could also opt to keep salary space open in a possible attempt to lure a superstar via free agency.
The Nets more immediate concern is how they can find a way to end their current four-game losing skid. They will attempt to do just that on Friday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.
