St. John's is losing star point guard Shamorie Ponds to the NBA.
Ponds announced on Instagram on Thursday night that he is entering the NBA draft and hiring an agent, forgoing his senior season.
The 6-foot-1 Brooklyn native also declared for the draft last year but did not hire an agent. He ultimately decided to return for his junior year.
"Playing for St. John's has been nothing less than amazing for me," Ponds wrote. "To RedStorm Nation, I thank y'all each & every night for giving me the confidence to be myself and accept me for who I am thru my highs & lows??. To my brothers, we been thru hell & back but this season was a success even though we ain't get the outcome we wanted."

Ponds was a first-team All-Big East selection each of the past two years. He averaged 19.7 points and 5.1 assists per game this season for a St. John's team that was eliminated by Arizona State in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament.
ESPN ranks Ponds as the 51st best player in the draft and the eighth best point guard. A Yahoo mock draft has him going to the Orlando Magic in the mid-second round, while DraftSite.com has the Golden State Warriors taking him with the 57th overall pick. One scout, however, told the New York Post it's possible Ponds will go undrafted.
