Expect to see more of Steve Tisch moving forward.
Of the Giants' two co-owners, John Mara has been the public face while Tisch has largely been relegated to the background. But Tisch said that is changing.
"I am involved," Tisch, the team's chairman, said at a news conference called Monday after the firing of coach Pat Shurmur. "I would like to be more involved. I will become more involved.
While the Giants slogged through a 4-12 season, Mara remained silent, but Tisch did speak publicly in early December, telling WNBC-TV: “It’s been a very frustrating season. At the end of the season John Mara and I are gonna get together and discuss the future. As partners we have to be very honest with each other about where we see this team going into the 2020 season.”
Tisch denied Monday that there has been any friction between him and Mara while they decided on firing Shurmur and retaining general manager Dave Gettleman.
“To say that there is any issues with our communication is a total mischaracterization,” Tisch said.
“We have a great dialogue with each other. It’s a very functional working relationship. Partnerships are hard, professional ones and domestic ones. I feel with differences in opinions expressed and communicated, we get to the same point.”
It's not hard to understand why Tisch wants to be more involved. The Giants are in the midst of perhaps the worst stretch in team history. Big Blue has reached the playoffs just once since its last Super Bowl championship following the 2011 season and has lost double-digit games in five of the past six years.
Tisch had a message for Giants fans: "I understand your frustration and concerns. There’s going to be a real priority that the next head coach has strong leadership abilities and a good track record."
