Ex-Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has been fired from his second tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Coughlin joined the Jaguars’ as executive vice president of football operations in 2017, following a long head coaching stint with the Giants from 2004-15.
"Within the past hour I informed Tom Coughlin that he was being relieved of his duties as Executive Vice President of Football Operations of the Jacksonville Jaguars, effective this evening," Jaguars owner Shad Khan said in statement. "I determined earlier this fall that making this move at the conclusion of the 2019 season would be in everyone's best interests but, in recent days, I reconsidered and decided to make this change immediately.”
Known for hardnosed tactics when running a franchise, the NFL’s Players Association recently filed and won a grievance against the Jaguars, claiming excessive fines from Coughlin who lost the respect of the locker room.
USA TODAY Images Coughlin returned to Jacksonville in 2017 and again found early success, leading them to the AFC championship game in his first season as executive vice president of football operations.
"I thank Tom for his efforts, not only over the past three years but for all he did from our very first season, 25 years ago, to put the Jacksonville Jaguars on the map,” Khan added. “General Manager Dave Caldwell and Head Coach Doug Marrone will each report directly to me on an interim basis. My expectations, and those of our fans, for our final two games and the 2020 season are high."
After their 2017 AFC Championship appearance, the Jaguars went 5-11 last season under the leadership of Coughlin and currently sit at 5-9.
At 73-years old, it’s very possible the two-time Super Bowl winning head coach won’t find another NFL job.
