As you know by now, the Mets' scheduled game against the Marlins Thursday night, as well as this weekend's Subway Series at Citi Field, ended up postponed after one Mets player and one Mets coach tested positive for Coronavirus.
What is questionable to some, however, is why, instead of the entire Mets traveling party quarantining in Miami, some of the group – specifically, those not in close contact with the infected persons – were allowed to return to New York late Thursday night.
The Mets have released an official statement:

(THREAD) Many have asked why the Mets flew back from Miami last night, rather than quarantine in Florida. Here's what I've been told: This was a joint decision between the Mets and MLB after consultation with medical experts.
— Steve Gelbs (@SteveGelbs) August 21, 2020The belief was that flying back to NY was a safer option than checking into a new hotel in Miami, given the rates of community spread in both places. The decision makers also took into account the proximity to medical and testing resources in NY.
— Steve Gelbs (@SteveGelbs) August 21, 2020Medical experts agreed that those who were not in close contact with the people who tested positive, were not at a significantly heightened risk. On the flight home, every person had to wear an N95 respirator mask. No one was permitted to take them off, even to eat or drink.
