Brett Gardner Remaining Cautiously Optimistic for 2020 Season

Several players across baseball tested positive for COVID-19 this weekend, raising concerns about the upcoming season.

Yankees DJ LeMahieu and Luis Cessa were among those confirmed cases, but Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner is trying to remain optimistic for the season, although he does not have "too grand of expectations."

"A lot of things are gonna have to go right for all this to work," he said, per Greg Joyce of The New York Post. "I'm optimistic, but I'm also cautious and a little hesitant at the same time."

Gardner's tone was more positive than comments made from Andrew Miller of the Cardinals or Sean Doolittle of the Nationals on Sunday, but it still raised concern with reality of trying to play this season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Doolittle not only raised skepticism about the season, but also questioned some owners, such as Yankees' Hal Steinbrenner, who believe fans can attend games at some point this year.

Gardner was, again, hopeful for fans but understood the reality was that it was unlikely.

"I'll definitely miss our Yankees fans, not just at home here in the Bronx, but on the road," he said, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. "Hopefully we don't have to play too many games without them. Hopefully, as the season goes on, we can play in front of fans again. But I think that's a little ways away."

Gardner added that there is a "little different feel" to Yankees camp but the goal remains the same.

"Everybody's happy to be back together and trying to get this thing going," he said, per Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record. "[It] is going to fly by and we need to make the most out of this time and be as smart as possible."
