The New York Yankees' Opening Day 30-man roster seems all but set, as the team made the following moves on Tuesday:
- Optioned LHP Jordan Montgomery to the Alternate Training Site.
- Signed LHP Luis Avilán, RHP David Hale and C Chris Iannetta to Major League contracts and selected them to the 40-man roster.
- Reassigned INF Matt Duffy, OF Estevan Florial, RHP Deivi García, OF Zack Granite, C Erik Kratz, RHP Brooks Kriske, LHP Tyler Lyons, RHP Nick Nelson, RHP Clarke Schmidt, RHP Nick Tropeano, RHP Miguel Yajure and RHP Tony Zych to the Alternate Training Site.
- Placed RHP Dan Otero on the restricted list.
Those moves leave the Yankees with exactly 30 active players – 17 position players, three starting pitchers and 10 relievers – with one more switch possible: DJ LeMahieu is technically currently on the injured list, while Rosell Herrera, who has been shut down with a foot issue, is still active.
LeMahieu is one of four players currently on the IL, with Masahiro Tanaka (concussion) and Luis Cessa and Aroldis Chapman (COVID-19 related) all inactive as well.
Although he was optioned to the alternate site, Montgomery is still likely to be the team's No. 5 starter; however, as he won't be needed until at least July 28 – manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that the team will likely bullpen the third game of the season against Washington with J.A. Happ to pitch the opener in Philly – optioning Montgomery allows the team to carry an extra bat for now.
