The Yankees are in Boston on Thursday to begin a four-game series with the Red Sox, but they'll have to face their rivals without one of their most reliable outfielders.
Brett Gardner missed the last four games and has now been placed on the 10-day injured list due to knee inflammation. The Yankees announced the move on Thursday evening. To fill his spot on the roster, New York has called up reliever Stephen Tarpley from Triple-A.
Prior to tonight's game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:•Placed OF Brett Gardner on the 10-day IL with left knee inflammation (retroactive to 7/22).•Recalled LHP Stephen Tarpley (#71) from Triple-A @swbrailriders.
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 25, 2019Gardner's addition to the injured list is retroactive to July 22, so that means he'll be eligible to return by August 1, just in time for the Yankees to host the Red Sox in the Bronx. Manager Aaron Boone told Mike Francesa on WFAN that Gardner "should be good to go by next weekend."
The 35-year-old has once again been ever-present for the Yankees in his 12th season with the team. He has 15 home runs and 41 RBIs in 92 games played in 2019.
Gardner's contributions have been part of the collective effort that has seen the Yankees thrive this season despite a plethora of injuries, including some to key players. Gary Sanchez went down with a groin injury and was placed on the injured list on Wednesday.
Boston trails New York by 11 games in the AL East heading into this crucial July series.
