The elbow injury that knocked Jordan Montgomery out of the Yankees' game at Houston on Tuesday night is expected to keep him sidelined for six to eight weeks.
The Yankees put the left-hander on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, a day after he left the game following one perfect inning with tightness in his throwing elbow.
Montgomery returned to New York to undergo tests Wednesday. Manager Aaron Boone told WFAN that the starting pitcher has a flexor strain.
“He’s got a flexor strain, which means he’s not going to be able to even throw anything probably for two or three weeks,” Boone said. “And then by the time you ramp him back up, it’s probably more of a six- to eight-week type injury."
In six starts this season, the 25-year-old Montgomery is 2-0 with a 3.62 ERA, 23 strikeouts and 12 walks.
The Yankees have called right-hander David Hale up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Hale, 30, was with the Yankees earlier this season before the Twins claimed him off waivers. After Hale allowed four runs in one relief appearance, Minnesota designated him for assignment, and the Yankees then signed him back as a free agent.
Domingo German could take Montgomery's spot in the rotation while he's out.
Meanwhile, the Yankees transferred Jacoby Ellsbury to the 60-day DL.
The 34-year-old outfielder has been dealing with one issue after another this season. He suffered an oblique injury that kept him out most of spring training. Just as he was set to come back, he contracted the flu.
Ellsbury was finally healthy when the Yankees broke camp, but after he only had 14 at-bats in the spring, he remained at the team's training facility in Tampa, Florida, to get more work in and ended up developing a hip issue.
The Yankees also announced Wednesday that outfielder Clint Frazier has been activated from the concussion DL and will be sent to Scranton.
