The New York Yankees announced Thursday that they have reassigned seven players to their Spring Training Alternate Site in Scranton.
Catcher Max McDowell, who was added on a minor-league contract just before Summer Camp started, was the only position player re-assigned, alongside six right-handed pitchers: Domingo Acevedo, Daniel Alvarez, Luis Gil, Luis Medina, Adonis Rosa, and Alexander Vizcaino.
Gil, Medina, and Vizcaino are all among the organization's Top 10 prospects, in various orders among the major outlets.
The team did get some encouraging news on one other right-hander on Thursday, that being Masahiro Tanaka, who threw a 30-pitch bullpen session that was "very crisp" and "higher-intensity than anticipated" according to pitching coach Matt Blake.
Tanaka, who had been sidelined since suffering a mild concussion on July 4, was hitting 88-91 MPHon his fastball according to Sweeny Murti, and Blake said Tanaka will throw another bullpen Sunday before facing hitters in a simulated game or live BP session early next week.
With less than seven days until Opening Day – which may not take place in the scheduled locale – and 12 days before the Yankees need a fifth starter, there may be enough time for Tanaka to be ready enough to contribute to the team immediately, especially given the 30-man roster, but manager Aaron Boone said he would be "a little surprised" if that is the case.
