With Wednesday's trade deadline nearing, rumors involving the Yankees and players they reportedly covet are swirling.

The latest from WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman is that New York is "still in touch" with the Giants about Madison Bumgarner. The Yankees clearly want a starting pitcher but not close on a deal yet.

Bumgarner has been the subject of trade speculation with the Yankees for months, although general manager Brian Cashman reportedly is reluctant to give up too much for a rest-of-the-season rental. It appeared Bumgarner had been removed from the trading block after the Giants clawed their way back into playoff contention, but that might not be the case after all.

Yahoo's Tim Brown reported Tuesday afternoon that Giants and Astros are "engaged" on Bumgarner, but it's not clear how serious the talks are.

BAUER TO REDS

Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer was also believed to be high on the Yankees' wish list, but he was traded Tuesday night to the Cincinnati Reds as part of a three-team deal that also involves the San Diego Padres, WFAN Heyman reported.

The Indians are also getting outfielder Yasiel Puig and pitching prospect Scott Moss from the Reds, and outfielder Franmil Reyes and prospects Logan Allen and Victor Nova from the Padres.

San Diego acquired outfielder Taylor Trammell, who was Cincinnati's top-rated prospect.

FRAZIER FOR RAY?

On Tuesday morning, The Athletic's Peter Gammons reported he's been hearing talk that the Yankees could send outfielder Clint Frazier to the Arizona Diamonbacks for left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray, or a package of players in exchange for Ray and reliever Archie Bradley. The Yanks' top prospect, pitcher Deivi Garcia, is not on the table, Gammons added.

SNY's Andy Martino reported later the Yankees and Diamondbacks are not close on a deal involving Ray.

Ray, 27, is 9-7 this season with a 3.91 ERA and 173 strikeouts. He is arbitration eligible for one more season before hitting free agency after 2020.

In 41 appearances this season, Bradley, 26, is 3-4 with a 4.30 ERA. The left-hander is under team control through 2021.

Once a top prospect in the Yankees' organization, Frazier, 24, has gotten lost in a numbers game on a loaded roster. In 53 big-league games this season, he hit .283 with 11 home runs, but he has been in Triple-A since June 16.

'WHEEL'-ING AND DEALING

The Astros appear to be the current front-runner to acquire Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler. The Athletic reported that Houston is "working hard" to land the right-hander, and SNY reported that a rival executive predicted Wheeler will be traded to the Astros on Tuesday.

The Yankees have reportedly expressed interest in Wheeler, as well as his Mets teammate Noah Syndergaard. But the New York Post's Joel Sherman wrote in his column Tuesday that it has been hard to find anyone with the Yankees who believes the Mets will trade either starting pitcher to their crosstown rival. The Mets and Yanks have not completed a major league trade since 2004.The A's, Rays and Braves and Brewers are other teams reportedly in on Wheeler.

YANKS EYEING ROARK

The Yankees, Braves and A's have expressed interest Reds right-hander Tanner Roark, Heyman reported Tuesday.

Roark, 32, is 6-6 with a 3.95 ERA in his first season in Cincinnati. The former National won 13 games or more three times in four years from 2014 to 2017 and has a career 3.63 ERA.
