Troy Tulowitzki hadn't played for the Yankees since suffering an injury back at the beginning of April, and now his injuries have forced him to retire from baseball.

The 34-year-old shortstop announced his retirement on Thursday via a statement released through the Yankees.

"I want to thank the Yankees organization and Brian Cashman for giving me the opportunity to wear the Yankees uniform and live out another childhood dream," Tulowitzki said in the statement. "I wish that my health had allowed for a different ending to that chapter."

Tulowitzki seemed like a player with tremendous potential back in his early days in Colorado. He made the All-Star game five times, but repeated injuries hampered him throughout his 13-year career.

The Yankees signed Tulowitzki thinking that he would come in and be their starting shortstop while Didi Gregorius recovered from injury. Gleyber Torres did most of the covering at short, and Tulowitzki only ended up playing five games for the team.

New York had Tulowitzki signed on a one-year, league-minimum deal, partially due to the risk associated with a player who deal with so many injuries.

"While this chapter is now over," Tulowitzki continued in his statement. "I look forward to continuing my involvement in the game that I love ... instructing and helping young players to achieve their goals and dreams."
