The Yankees' early-season nightmare continued Thursday as they placed Troy Tulowitzki on the 10-day disabled list with a left calf strain. The veteran shortstop is the third Yankee to hit the IL this week.

Tulowitzki left Wednesday's home game against Detroit after three innings with the low-grade strain and went to the hospital for further testing.

The Yankees signed Tulowitzki in January to a one-year, league-minimum deal to help fill in for Didi Gregorius, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery. Tulowitzki, 34, missed all of the 2018 season and much of 2017 with the Toronto Blue Jays due to an array of injuries -- bone spurs in both heels, a pulled hamstring and a sprained ankle.

Through five games, the five-time All-Star is batting .182 (2-for-11) with one homer and one RBI.

"Definitely disappointed," Tulowitzki said Wednesday, according to ESPN. "To get back and to be back out there, I enjoyed it. But I mean, hey, it is what it is. No reason to make it any worse. Look on the positive side and get back with the team and help us win some games and do what I've got to do to be a good teammate. Do the stuff I've got to do in the training room, and things will work out."

The Yankees called up 23-year-old infielder Thairo Estrada to take Tulowitzki's spot on the roster.

Other Yankees currently on the injured list include pitchers Luis Severino, CC Sabathia, Dellin Betances and Jordan Montgomery, and position players Giancarlo Stanton, Miguel Andujar, Aaron Hicks and Jacoby Ellsbury.

The Yankees (2-4) open a three-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday.
