The Giants' pass rush was beyond disappointing in 2018, collecting just 30 sacks on the season, tying them with the Patriots for 30th in the league.
Now it looks like the team may be ready to move on from its top edge rusher.
New York has discussed trading Olivier Vernon, according to multiple reports.
Citak: Nick Foles, Teddy Bridgewater Lead Free Agent QB Class
Vernon, who moved from defensive end to outside linebacker last season, has two years left on his contract, both of which have cap hits of $19.5 million.
The Giants can clear $11.5 million by parting ways with Vernon, but would prefer to receive some draft compensation rather than just cutting him.
Appearing in only 11 games last season, the 28-year-old collected seven sacks and one forced fumble. Vernon has registered 22 sacks and four forced fumbles over the last three seasons with New York, but has missed nine games due to injuries.
The Giants signed Vernon to a five-year, $85 million deal during the 2016 offseason. Vernon, along with Janoris Jenkins and Damon Harrison, were the team's three big free agent additions that offseason.
Based on the relatively thin class of pass rushers set to hit the open market this offseason, Vernon would likely be one of the top free agents at his position if he is released.
