Boomer Esiason: Similarities Between John Hynes, David Fizdale Situations

It's easy to draw parallels between the Devils firing coach John Hynes on Tuesday and the situation currently surrounding Knicks coach David Fizdale, WFAN's Boomer Esiason said.

On Wednesday's "Boomer and Gio" show, Esiason said Devils general manager Ray Shero did the right thing by parting ways with Hynes when he did. The Devils were 9-13-4, had lost their previous two games by a margin of 11-1 and were in last place in the Metropolitan Division despite the offseason additions of P.K. Subban, Wayne Simmonds and Jack Hughes.

"And the reason he did the right thing was last night the Devil fan was going to show up at the Rock and they were just going to go after Coach Hynes," Esiason said. "They were just going to tear into him. And Shero didn't want to put a guy who he has a lot of respect for through that."

Meanwhile, there's constant speculation about Fizdale's job security. The Knicks are 4-17 -- the worst record in the Eastern Conference -- and have dropped seven straight. They were embarrassed Monday night in Milwaukee, losing 132-88.

"I'm telling you David Fizdale's going to start hearing it, and he's going to start hearing it loud, especially if his team continues to look like it looks and gives poor performances like they have done a number of times this year," Esiason said. "Not just the last game against Milwaukee, but other times as well. And there seems like there's no rhyme or reason to the team, and if the players start tuning him out and the fans start screaming and yelling and social media plays a big part in all of this, the owners are going to react.

"And I think that (Knicks owner) Jim Dolan will be a little bit more patient maybe. But the next couple of games here at the Garden, if they get ugly and the fans turn on the team and turn on Fizdale, I wouldn't be surprised that before Jan. 1 he's gone."

Esiason added that he believes Giants coach Pat Shurmur will survive the season, but if the Giants are embarrassed, especially on national TV on Monday night against the Eagles, the calls for his job, too, will grow louder.
