Bill Simmons joined Mike Francesa on Wednesday to discuss the talent of Duke forward Zion Williamson. The discussion soon turned into a passionate debate over how high the 18-year-old’s NBA potential could be.
Francesa does not view Williamson as a generational talent like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Larry Bird or Magic Johnson.
“He’s not going to be great in the pros,” Francesa said. “You think he’s going to be like LeBron (James) or Michael (Jordan) in the pros? You’re out of your mind.
“I saw Magic (Johnson) play in college and Larry (Bird) play in college – and knew they were going to be immortal players,” Francesa added. “I knew it. I don’t think this guy is going to be immortal. I don’t think he’s going to be that kind of guy. I think he’s going to be a good player. I don’t think he’s going to be a great player.”
“I think he’s the best can’t-miss prospect since (Kevin) Durant in ’07,” Simmons countered. “I think he’s one of the four greatest athletes I’ve ever seen on a basketball court.”
Simmons implored Francesa to change his mind while he still can.
“Get out now and be on the right side of history,” Simmons said. “This is going to be bad for you. I’m telling you.”
The back-and-forth continued throughout the segment with Simmons and Francesa agreeing on a bet.
“Here’s the bet – he is not First-Team All-NBA in his first three seasons,” Francesa stated. “Is that a fair bet?”
The pair agreed on five years being the bet.
“Alright, five years,” Simmons responded. “I’ll do it. I believe in Zion. Within the next five years, he’ll be First-Team All-NBA.”
Williamson averaged 22.5 points per game, 8.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in his freshman season. He recorded 32 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in Duke’s 77-76 win over University of Central Florida.
The Blue Devils face Virginia Tech in the Sweet 16 on Friday night.
