Giancarlo Stanton has suffered another setback as he tries to return to the Yankees, although this one is believed to be more of a bump in the road than a pothole.
The slugger was scratched from his minor league rehab start Tuesday night because of a knee issue. Stanton was hit by a pitch during live batting practice last week and then felt tightness and soreness in the knee and calf area before Tuesday's game with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said holding Stanton out was done as a precaution and he doesn't "think it's a big deal." Boone said Tuesday that he expects Stanton to play Wednesday.
The 29-year-old former MVP was placed on the Yankees' injured list April 1. A few weeks later, he experienced a residual problem in his left shoulder that required a cortisone shot.
In other Yankees injury news:
• At Camden Yards on Tuesday, Aaron Judge took dry swings in the bullpen, played catch and tracked pitches from Masahiro Tanaka. "Just him starting to get ramped up, create a little bit of timing,'' Boone said. Judge has been out since April 21 with a left oblique strain.
• Tanaka, who took a comebacker off his right shin Saturday, pitched a bullpen session Tuesday and felt good afterward, WFAN's Sweeny Murti reported. Tanaka is slated to start Thursday.
• James Paxton (knee) will throw a three-inning simulated game in Tampa on Friday. The expectation is that he will rejoin the rotation next week against the Padres.
