The Yankees have selected Delbarton right-hander Jack Leiter in the 20th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.

Leiter, son of former Mets and Yankees pitcher Al Leiter, made it clear to MLB teams prior to the start of the draft that he plans on honoring his commitment to Vanderbilt.

But that didn't stop the Yankees from attempting to pair the pitcher with his Delbarton teammate, shortstop Anthony Volpe, who the team took with its first round pick Monday night.

Volpe is also commited to Vanderbilt, but signs point towards the shortstop skipping college in order to join the Yankees' farm system.

Leiter and Volpe both earned gold medals with the United States under-18 national team at the Pan-American Championships in December. The 19-year-old ace has a fastball that sits in the mid-90s along with a nasty curveball, which helped him solidify his spot as one of the most talented pitchers to come out of New Jersey.

Leiter is 8-1 with a 0.54 ERA this season for Delbarton, which earned a rematch with St. Augustine in the NJSIAA Non-Public A Final Thursday. He has racked up 88 strikeouts, compared to just 19 walks, in 52.1 innings.

Al Leiter stepped away from his job as a YES Network analyst in order to spend more time with his son during his senior year. The elder Leiter still serves as a front office adviser for the Mets.
