The Yankees were looking to deal Sonny Gray and they finally were able to get a deal done. According to ESPN, the Yankees are trading Sonny Gray to the Reds. It is reportedly a three-team deal that includes the Mariners. The Yankees will get outfield prospect Josh Stowers from the Mariners, while Seattle will get second base prospect Shed Long from the Reds. The Reds will also be getting LHP prospect Reiver Sanmartin from the Yankees.
Gray also has reached an extension with the Reds for three years, $30 million. That is on top of the $7.5 million he will make this season. There also is a club option of $12 million for 2023.
Gray struggled last season for the Yankees before they moved him to the bullpen. He finished the season 11-9 with a 4.90 ERA. Gray, 29, was acquired by the Yankees from the A's in 2017 and went 4-7 in 11 starts that season.
The Yankees were reportedly going to get Long, but it then became a three-team deal where they get Stowers from Seattle instead. Stowers, 21, played his first season in the minors least year. The center fielder hit .260 with a .380 OBP with the single-A Everett AquaSox in 58 games with five homers, 28 RBI, and 20 steals.
Long was the Reds No. 7 prospect. Long is 23 and a left-handed bat who played 126 games in double-A last season. He hit .261 with a .353 OBP with 12 homers, 56 RBI, and 19 stolen bases.
