Over the years Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has come on WFAN when things were not going smoothly. Monday afternoon was not one of those times, and Cashman even joked with Francesa to conclude their interview.
"I actually asked our media relations director Jason Zillo, I was like 'listen, we're going well, should I even bother going on with anybody?'"
Cashman has a lot of reasons to be happy, as the Yankees have managed to pull within one game of the Red Sox before the two teams meet for three games in the Bronx starting Tuesday.
"I think today (Monday) is a much needed off day after 18 in a row, but our guys I'm sure are looking forward to getting after it again tomorrow and seeing if we can gain some more ground here in the next three days," he told Francesa.
Maybe it's the youth of the Yankees, or their collective fight, but Cashman exhibited an enthusiasm about this club, which seemed most evident in his comments about manager Aaron Boone.
"I'm thankful that he's continuing to just grow and be comfortable, even though I don't think he's ever been uncomfortable. It just feels that he was made for the position and he's handling it quite well," Cashman said.

He was also very complimentary of the soon-to-be 38-year-old CC Sabathia, and happy that he chose to stay a Yankee. "He has been tremendous both obviously as a performer and a leader in that clubhouse," Cashman remarked.
The only potential area that would have been a cause for concern is the Sonny Gray-Gary Sanchez-Austin Romine situation, but that didn't seem to faze Cashman.
"What you've seen and what we've reacted to is Sonny has a better comfort level with Austin Romine and it's kind of forced that hand, and he's responded well to it," Cashman said. Adding "In terms of teammate on teammate, Sonny and Gary are great together, but clearly the combination of Sonny and Romine, as pitcher to catcher, seems to be working exceedingly better than the other alternative."
Cashman gave injury updates on Greg Bird and Brandon Drury, and also shined a light on the contributions from Miguel Andujar, Gleyber Torres, and Didi Gregorius.
