On Tuesday, Moose and Maggie’s Mystery Guest presented by Jersey Mike’s brought a little night-night to the 1 p.m. hour on WFAN.
The Mystery Guest was calling from the car on the way to his daughter’s AAU basketball game in the Texas area, and after discerning he was a former NBA star who played for four teams, Moose and Maggie incorrectly guessed Antonio Davis and Michael Finley, respectively. But, after revealing he went to North Carolina, the mystery guest was identified by Maggie as…
Sam Perkins!
Yes, it was former Mavs/Pacers/Lakers/Sonics star “Sleepy Sam” who joined Moose and Maggie to kick off their final hour, and he apologized for traveling but did give some words on how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting youth sports in his home state.
“I’m coaching my daughter’s AAU team – and yes, we are playing basketball here, but with the COVID guidelines, they get you in and get you right out when you’re done,” Perkins said.
With that, Moose asked him his approach to coaching youth travel ball after being a College Basketball Hall of Famer and 17-year NBA veteran, and Perkins was hesitant to give himself any dap.
“I had so many great mentors, they all wrapped into one….I guess I’m okay, but you’d have to ask these girls,” Perkins said sheepishly. “I have a head coach, and he’s louder than me – I thought I was loud, but he is louder than me! I guess I’m more mild-mannered still, but I’m teaching every second of the game, to try to get them to where they want to be.”
And, he noted, even at the youth level, there is a huge difference between genders on the court.
“There’s more teaching involved with girls; they may not have the athleticism, but they still have the same basketball instincts, and want to learn,” Perkins said. “They want to emulate who they see, but they also try to do what they know they can do – if they recognize themselves as a great shooter or a great defensive player, they want to do that, but boys will ad lib and try to do everything.”
Perkins then of course discussed several pro basketball topics, including his thoughts on the NBA bubble and the recent “The Last Dance” documentary.
