On Thursday, Moose and Maggie’s Mystery Guest presented by Jersey Mike’s was, for a change, an easy guess to start the 1 p.m. hour on WFAN.
Today’s Mystery Guest was calling from New Jersey, and as soon as he said that, Marc Malusis got it right away…
John Harper!
“I’ve worked with you too many times to not know it was you based on how you pronounced New Jersey,” Moose said after the correct guess, to which Harper replied: “I have a lot to live up to with that list of mystery guests from this week!”
But yes, it was long-time New York sportswriter and current SNY contributor John Harper who jumped on hours before the opening of the 2020 MLB season, and this was his thought when asked by Maggie about how, on a micro-level, one misadventure on the road could take down the whole season.
“That would be a concern, but I think these teams…you have young guys on the road – not the road as we know it if places aren’t open – but when you hear Aaron Judge say something like he’s going to watch everyone, that might keep some guys in line,” Harper said. “But I do think these guys understand what’s at stake; I’m sure some will take liberties, but you know there are going to be some positive tests along the way. Teams are ready for it, but sure, a major outbreak could take down the entire season.”
And as far as the rumored expanded playoffs go?
“I wouldn’t be surprised because it’s all about money, and both sides would benefit from it,” Harper said. “I don’t really love it – this is 60 games, and I want them to be as meaningful as possible. If you expand the playoffs, you’re taking the pressure off a lot of favorites who might have otherwise been worried about missing the postseason. It will make for more chaos in October, and that may be a fun thing, but I want these games to be meaningful.”
