“Mr. Met” Bob Heussler spent plenty of time with Steve Somers as co-workers at WFAN, but his first glimpse of Steve as a sports personality began even before Steve’s legendary tenure at the FAN got started.
During Friday night’s Final Schmooze, Steve talked with “Mad Dog” Chris Russo about Steve’s audition at NBC, shortly before he became one of the original voices at WFAN, and Bob just so happened to be watching that audition.

“I heard you for the first time, I was listening live that night, January 1986, when you did your audition on that NBC Sports Night when you were competing against Dave Sims, with Mike Breen producing,” Bon said. “I swear…I was listening and saying ‘wow, this guy is different.’ your humor, you were really going the self-deprecating route. But it was funny and it struck me. Not too many years later, I got to work with you.”
Bob had a good ear for potential, as Steve went on to put in more than 34 years at WFAN, many with Bob, and is now saying his final goodbyes, the last one coming Monday from 1-2 p.m. After that, one of the great sports radio careers will come to an end.
“If there’s ever a match for a personality to a medium, Steve Somers to radio is that perfect match,” Bob said. “I don’t think it can be duplicated, because radio is changing so rapidly.”
