Boomer & Gio: How much does the NFL's cognitive test matter?

The NFL Draft is just three days away, and there are a lot of different directions the Jets and Giants could go. Quarterback is not one of them, although if the results of the new cognitive tests that replaced the Wonderlic are something to go on, you never know if C.J. Stroud might still be available at 13 at least?

“Somebody is out to get C.J. Stroud, because these cognitive test results have been leaked,” Gio said. “This is the new Wonderlic test, those are no more, but his scores were leaked and it was one of the worst ever, while Bryce Young had one of the best ever.”

“You know who had one of the worst Wonderlics ever? Dan Marino, and he turned out to be one of the best ever,” Boomer shot back. “Sometimes it doesn’t correlate to the game itself; sometimes on the field is here they become most comfortable, and Dan is a prime example of this.”

Gio’s not saying no one should draft Stroud, who is not a consensus No. 1 pick (that’s Young), but is a Top 5 pick somewhere in every mock you can find. But, it goes to show, he noted, that every year, there’s something that comes out about someone that hurt draft stock unnecessarily.

“Every year there’s one guy people zero on to knock them down a peg – Josh Allen with the Tweets from when he was 13, or Laremy Tunsil and the gas mask,” Gio said.

“Like I always tell you: it doesn’t matter. Whether you’re first or 53rd like Jalen Hurts was, you want that second contract,” Boomer replied. “The first one, great, for most it’s life-changing, but it’s just the beginning of what could truly be life-changing money for these kids.”

Boomer remembers when even he was the subject of scrutiny back in 1984, and he ended up a second-round pick – but then became a future four-time Pro Bowler, the 1988 MVP, and the QB on the 1988-89 AFC Champions. Allen has become a top QB, and Tunsil is a three-time Pro Bowler in seven seasons, so both of them have turned out okay so far, as well.

Booms seemed to intimate that he’s heard from Frank Reich in not so many words that the Panthers are going Young at No. 1, mostly because his personality and want for greatness matches his physical tools, but that doesn’t mean Stroud or anyone else won’t be just as successful.

So, then, what about the Jets at 13 assuming they stay there? Jets beat writer Rich Cimini thinks Georgia tackle Broderick Jones is the likely pick, although Booms thinks that pick is headed to Green Bay eventually if and when the Aaron Rodgers trade gets finalized.

But then again, there’s surely a surprise coming with one of the five quarterbacks earmarked as potential first-round picks, so who knows?
