Look, it's a holiday weekend at the end of summer, so we're just gonna break the fourth wall here for a minute: as a sportswriter, there are some names that you just loathe writing over and over at first. Names like Krzyzewski, Yastrzemski, and Antetokounmpo make spell check want to quit until you add them, and eventually find some way to remember to get it right the first time.
Now, imagine having to be the one to pronounce them, especially if it's one you've never really covered from a foreign country?
Imagine it, and you know how a poor Australian TV broadcaster felt when he butchered the Greek Freak's name, and ended up as the Boomer & Gio Moment of the Day – and the latest stop on the Gregg Giannotti Impersonation World Tour – a half a world away.
"Antakatomatoo was ejected…throw him right out of the game he did!" Aussie Gio said, which reminded Jerry Recco of the time the legendary Casey Kasem went bananas over a song dedication to a deceased dog (warning – that link has some NSFW language).
And that sent Gio back down under into his usual Sean Marks voice.
"Find me that SOB Danny, and get him in here! This is the fourth time this week he's given me a name I can't pronounce! Antockatomatoo? You can't just throw that in there ya dummy! You make me look like an ass on the TV! That's gonna go viral, you know that? And it's gonna be on me, not on you, because you hide in that newsroom!"
