The unwritten rules of sports reared their ugly head again on Friday's Boomer & Gio Show, and as much as Boomer tried to defend his innocence in a game his Bengals won 61-7 over the Oilers in December 1989, well, Jerry spent just as much time calling him out.
"You have to understand the environment – Bengals vs Oilers, Sam Wyche vs Jerry Glanville – to get it; those two coaches and teams hated each other," Boomer said. "I walked up to Warren Moon after the game and asked him to remind his guys I wasn't on the field when all this went on, because I know who's going to feel the brunt of it next time – it was gonna be my ass on the ground at that stupid Astrodome, and sure enough, it was."
"You threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to make it 45-0 late in the third quarter," Jerry deadpanned to Boomer.
"That was a hitch pass I threw at the line of scrimmage and the guy (receiver Tim McGee) made five guys miss!" Boomer shot back.
"Maybe, but it's more fun to just say you threw a 74-yard touchdown pass up 38-0," Jerry laughed.
To Boomer's point, the Bengals did still outscore Houston 16-7 the rest of the way with Erik Wilhelm at the helm, and Wyche's comment post-game was "we don't like this team we don't like their people. When you get a chance to (run up the score), you do it."
