Boomer: NFL may try to take punts out of the game

The NFL could be on its way to bringing in college rules for the fair catch on punts, bringing the ball to the 25-yard line regardless of where the fair catch is called.

The rule is part of the league's efforts to make the game safer, which led to rule changes on kickoffs, and Boomer says it could be the next step into eliminating punts altogether.

"They may want to try to take punts out of the game, because that's where a lot of the injuries happen," Boomer said. "They're talking about it. Maybe not next year, but in future years."

Gio couldn't believe the news. What would happen to all the punters in the game under contract?

"See ya," Boomer said bluntly.

"They are saying that what they see on punt returns and the punt game, it's where a lot of injuries are returning."

So, how would the game operate without punts? Boomer didn't have the concrete answer to that, but believes discussions are happening to find alternatives.

"Put the ball on the other team's 20-yard line," Boomer pondered. "I don't know the answer, I'm just saying these are some of the concerns they have."

But what Boomer and Gio made clear was that the elimination of the punter would be a massive loss for the spirit of the game.

"Punts are a big part of the game," Boomer said. "Love the punt game."
