Boomer not surprised by Dan Hurley/Lakers bombshell given state of college sports

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers are preparing a massive contract offer for UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley in a stunning move.

But, reacting live as the news broke, Boomer wasn’t all that stunned given the current landscape of college athletics.

“I feel bad for Connecticut,” Boomer said. “But I also realize in this world of college athletics, in that world and what he’s accomplished, the turnstile of players that is required to keep everybody together, and the amount of money, and the unfettered free agency, which is basically what college sports is these days. Players can leave and come and go…it’s an absolute mess.

“It’s not surprising that he would look to jump to the NBA for a massive contract.”

Hurley has won two straight national championships in Storrs, and has the pieces in place to make a run at a third, but Boomer says you will see more accomplished college coaches, like Hurley and Jim Harbaugh in football, bolt for the pros given the impact of the transfer portal.

“I feel bad for the university, but I think this is gonna happen more and more,” Boomer said. “Where successful college coaches leave for the stability, believe it or not, of professional sports.”
