If Drew Brees does indeed retire at the end of the season as rumored, he won’t finish as the NFL’s all-time leader in touchdown passes – but he did set one NFL record of sorts in the 2020 regular-season finale.

Brees’ touchdown pass to Emmanuel Sanders in the second quarter of Sunday’s Saints game against Carolina was the 1,087th broadcast by NFL RedZone this season, setting a new single-season record for the channel with still more than 300 minutes of action to go on Sunday.

It was a banner touchdown day for RedZone overall, as the 96 TD scored during their broadcast shattered the previous single-day record of 85, and those 96 touchdowns pushed the final season total to 1,118.

RedZone, of course, shows every touchdown from every game in the 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. windows on Sundays, so the record is even more impressive given the amount of games in 2020 that were either nationally televised or postponed to a non-Sunday schedule and thus not shown via the platform.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reported this week that Brees is widely expected to retire following this season and move into the broadcast booth. He entered Sunday 13 TD passes behind Tom Brady, who tossed four in the Buccaneers’ Sunday afternoon win in Atlanta to boost his career total to 581.

The catch was also one of nine for Sanders on a big day for him, as he needed just eight to reach 60 receptions for the season, and reach a $500,000 incentive clause in his contract.
